Hi guys!
This “DIY” was posted by STUNTMAN in the Portuguese Airsoft forum(http://forum.ptairsoft.org/index.php) and i found it really cool and somewhat easy to do.

How many times have we seen military pics and noticed cool looking tape antennas like these:

Well, i always wanted one, but they were either expensive, incompatible with the rádios we were using or not for sale.
So after a little research and speaking with some international airsoft players, and the help of Doc, a player from Huelva(Spain), I decided to make a fake tape antenna, just for good looks and at an affordable price, 10€.
The things needed , besides the radio, a midland G7 with detachable antenna, are:

- 12mm shrink tube
- Old tape measure(a busted one ;))
- Elastic band(black)

Image

In this case i´ve cut 1 meter from the old tape and put it inside the shrink tube:

Next i put the antenna:

Afterwards begins the process of heating the shrink tube , be very carefull with the positioning of everything at this stage because after the heating process starts there will be no margin for errors. There´s some sort of glue inside the shrink tube that molds itself and sticks to the stuff inside
I recommend the use of a “heat gun" or a hair dryer, a cigar lighter will do but it will take a lot more work and time(children should not try this unless they have parental supervison)
After that´s done and everything is cold it´s time to bend it all to shape like the real ones and you then use the elastic bands to secure everything in place:

It should look somewhat like this when done:

Thanks Larry for helping me translate ;)

I hate to rain on the parade here, but as a Federal Agent and lifelong amateur radio enthusiast who is familiar with USA laws regarding radio, I want to point out that the modification the person in the photos performed is usually illegal in the USA; specifically modifying an FCC type-accepted FRS radio to an SMA antenna mount, and attaching an external antenna.

If the radio is FRS-only, or is to be used by persons who do not possess a GMRS license, then it can not be modified from the original design; for example, no change in the original antenna and absolutely no removable antenna.

If the radio is to be used by persons who do possess a GMRS license (or whose family does), then it can be used with a removable external antenna, however most serious GMRS users purchase higher-quality radios that have removable antennae anyhow.

I believe the rules may even be more strict now, the laws I mention above were the case when I was working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2005-2006 rewriting the state's emergency radio SOP.

If you want to learn more, pick the brains of the guys on the Popular Wireless forum, it is easy to find online (yes I am a dork and a frequent visitor there!)

Thank you for reading this.

the radio is PMR(european) and the modification is strictly cosmetic ;)

Ferra,

Where did you get this photo? I'm pretty sure I have worn the vest that the guy second from the left front row has on.

The pic was posted on the airsoft forum already i only erased the faces of the soldiers, it probably came from militaryphotos.net.
That vest looks pretty similar to a CIRAS vest, but the quick release isn´t located near the neck (there are a few of these on the pic) so it´s not the maritime version, perhaps it´s the land version?

Thank you for clarifying that; it resembles a typical "bubble pack" FRS/GMRS radio as marketed in the USA.
